Catchers and Pop ups

  1. All pop ups break toward the infield on the decent. The catcher should catch these with thier back toward the infield and play the ball an arms length from thier body as this will allow for adjustment. On pops in fair territory, take three steps out in front of the plate and catch them like an infielder.
  2. The catcher should develop a habit of turning to thr side of the pitch as that is side the pop up usually will go. Another indicator is when the pitch is down, the pop up usually goes away from the hitter and when it is up, the pop up usually goes toward the hitter.
  3. The catcher should practice throwing the mask in the opposite direction of the pop up and clear the feet.
  4. When the ball is in the sun, the catcher should shield his eyes with his bare hand leaving his glove hand free if possible.
  5. Pop ups should be caught with the face of the glove up and hands even with the face whenever possible. This allows recovery on a bobbled ball and also has you in the throwing position.
  6. The catcher should catch all pop ups behind the plate. But to avoid collisions, chasing balls down either line, the catcher should let others call the ball. Once another player has called for the ball, the catcher should call their name loudly so they know they can make the play.
