Pitcher Backing up Bases
Purpose:
- Pitchers are required to back up bases on plays. Balls to the outfield the pitcher should be thinking backing up third or home depending on the circumstances.
Equipment:
- Field, Infield/Outfield/Pitcher
Drill:
- Practice during infield/outfield, have pitchers participate and practice backing up the throws.
- Most backup are at third and home, the pitcher should go half way between third and home and move to the corresponding base depending on where throw is directed.
- Always get as far back as possible when backing up. You can cover more ground on balls of line or deflected.
Result:
- Good fielding pitchers help themself out of situations
- Pitchers are fielders after they throw the ball.
- Save runs by being in the right spot.
