Fundamentals of Second Base

1. Practice all types of throws, especially sidearmand underhand, which are used most frequently in completing a double play.
2. Know the type of hitter and their speed. This will aid you positioning yourself for a ball hit to you.
3. Make every effort to knock down any ball even though you might not not be able to throw out the hitter.
4. Have a sign with the shortstop as to who will cover second base on a possible steal.
5. In taking a throw from the catcher on a possible steal, get there as soon as possible, straddle the bag and allow the runner to tag himself by sliding into the ball.
6. Be ready to cover first base on a bunt when the first charges the ball to field it.
7. Practice coming in on slowly hit balls, fielding it with your bare hand and throwing to first underhand. This is on a do or die type play.
