shortstop

  1. In taking a throw from the catcher on a possible steal, get there as soon as possible, straddle the bag and allow the runner to tag himself by sliding into the ball.rong, accurate arm, good hands, and ability to move to fast are important qualifications of a good shortstop.

  9. With runners on first and second and th ebunt in order, play as close to second as possible to prevent a big lead and break by the runner to third.
  10. The shortstop will normally take the throw from the pitcher on a double play. Always check with your second baseman in the event they may cover when you can not get to the bag in time.
  11. In taking a throw from the catcher on a possible steal, get there as soon as possible, straddle the bag and allow the runner to tag himself by sliding into the ball.
  12. On the bunt play, be ready to take the force at second.
  13. Learn your position on all cut plays.
  14. Make every effort to knock down any ball even though you might not not be able to throw out the hitter.
  15. On the rundown play, force the runner to the base he started and make the tag there if possible.
  16. Spend as much time as possible in the execution of the double play. Have balls thrown to you from all directions and learn to shift your feet accordingly.
  17. Work together with second baseman and have a complete understanding of each others actions on every pitched ball. Especially when runners are on base.
  18. On balls fielded in deep shortstop, slide your right foot sideways to serve as brace for your long throw to first.
  19. Do not let the ball play you - take charge and play the ball.
